HEDGER: You Might Be an Old Racer If …

BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. — Looking at old photos as we prepared the visuals for our Racing Memories program at the Saratoga Automobile Museum in November triggered a lot of memories. 

Most were good but some are a bit shaky. Racing has changed a lot over the decades and we got to thinking of Jeff Foxworthy’s famed “You Might Be a Redneck If …” comedy routine and how it might apply to racing.

You Might Be an Old Racer If … 

■ You remember when pit passes cost the same or less than grandstand tickets instead of two or three times general admission.

■ You can picture all the officials dressed in white shirts and pants with black-and-white striped jackets for cold nights.

■ You can remember huge fires lit intentionally to rid the racing surface of gas spilled from ruptured tanks in the pre-fuel cell days.

■ You can recall when there was no such thing as “racing gas,” only gas station hi-test supplemented by a few gallons of airplane fuel to boost octane.
