Glory Days: Bloomquist Bests 224-Car World 100 Field

Scott Bloomquist outsmarted a stout 224-car field of late models and outlasted Mother Nature to capture $34,000 and his third World 100 victory at Eldora Speedway. Bloomquist last won the event in 1990.

“It’s been so long that I’ve been up here, I was beginning to think I would never find it,” Bloomquist said.

Just as the final car was completing its first-round qualifying run Friday, rain hit the half-mile oval. Promoter Earl Baltes elected to cancel the second round. Again, Saturday, following the completion of the first. heat, rain came, creating a two-hour delay.

Jim Curry jumped into the early lead in the 100-lap finale, with polesitter Terry Phillips in pursuit. That duo instantly opened a six-ear-length advantage over the balance of the field, as Delmas Conley, Dan Schlieper and R.J. Conley chased.

Ninth-starter Bloomquist was wasting little time in his charge to the front. By lap three he was up to sixth, while Donnie Moran was up to fifth, from eighth.

Things changed after a lap-seven restart.
