When we try to capture the essence of those who race, invariably dramatic imagery is employed. These people are presented as warriors, gladiators or cowboys, and the races themselves are portrayed in a corresponding manner.
Thus, a big event is a showdown, smackdown or mayhem, and when these people band together they are among a group of invaders or outlaws. What most can agree on is that racers are common people doing an uncommon thing.
For a moment let’s put this declaration under the microscope. It should be obvious that few have the guts or talent to race. Yet, how often do we lose sight of the first half of that statement? After all, these are people with real lives outside of the cockpit. They have relationships to maintain, often have children to raise, bills to pay and everyday concerns like all people.
