FERNS: PitFit Training

INDIANAPOLIS — Last year, before I officially began my Indy NXT endeavors, but at a time I was aware of the path I was set to follow, I needed an Indy-area gym in which to train.

Five-mile runs around my race shop parking lot and weight training with race parts weren’t going to cut it much longer.

Several people had mentioned that the Indy NXT cars are physically demanding and I wanted to ensure I was taking all the necessary steps to proactively set myself up for a successful debut.

Enter PitFit — a familiar name in the motorsports community that was highly recommended by many racers.

After connecting with Jim Leo, the owner, I began training at the PitFit facility.

I have always loved intense workouts, oddly enough, and my health and fitness are something I take extremely seriously, but I underestimated just how much I would become obsessed with working out at my new gym.

Their systems, technique, culture, tools and people are what make the gym so special.

Speaking for myself, all of my workouts are pre-uploaded to an app so each day I can see what’s on the gym agenda in terms of my routine, set amounts, reps, etc. Additionally, there are demonstration video clips on how to complete the workout in the event the user does not know how to perform the recommended exercise.

Although I prefer working out at the Indy facility (they also have a facility in the Charlotte area), the intuitive app was great for when I had to train in Michigan over the winter while I was finishing law school and traveling.

Make no mistake, I was assigned a personal PitFit trainer to work with one-on-one and, when training at the gym, I have access to any of the trainers working on the floor. They are super knowledgeable, helpful and people who genuinely care about my fitness health.

Access to the different training tools and equipment available at the gym has also been tremendously beneficial. Outside of all the state-of-the-art gym equipment, members can utilize cognitive training tools, sauna(s), a racing simulator, a cold-plunge tub and more.

The gym even offers special “Kart Fit” workshops that incorporate an interval training circuit with indoor go-karts.

It truly is a community of people centered around improving human performance specifically in the motorsports industry, but also in any form of sport. The trainers take into consideration the muscle areas that are focal points of race car drivers and implement exercises into our routines to strengthen those areas to meet peak performance. They also note other areas that may be of personal concern.

I can honestly say that after my first two weeks of training at PitFit I recognized a massive improvement in my physical performance during my sprint car and Silver Crown races.

As I continue to train at PitFit, I hope to be as physically ready as I can be for my first Indy NXT race July 13 at Iowa Speedway.

Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.
