MUNDELEIN, Ill. – Newman Wachs Racing officials announced the return of the team to the Road to Indy Presented by Cooper Tires.
The team has acquired a pair of brand new Tatuus IP-22 cars to compete in the Indy Pro 2000 Championship Presented by Cooper Tires.
For the past two years, Newman Wachs Racing has been competing successfully in another U.S. open-wheel series, but the debut of the new halo-fitted cars for next season sparked serious interest in a return. The team has the goal to return to the winning pedigree for which they have strived since their start in the Champ Car Atlantic Championship in 2006.
“I am extremely happy to be returning to the Road to Indy for the 2022 Indy Pro 2000 series,” said Brian Halahan, Newman Wachs Racing Team Manager. “Andersen Promotions runs a very professional program and I look forward to being a part of it again on the team level. The new car is an extremely high-quality product, and we’ve taken the necessary time to prep our cars to our high standards. The team and I are going into the season with the goal of putting NWR in the fight for podiums and wins with the ultimate goal of battling for the championship.”
Having launched in 2006, Newman Wachs Racing has won many races over the years, beginning in the Champ Car Atlantic Championship, where they scored the title in 2009 with John Edwards. The team took several years off from competition in the early 2010s and returned to the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship in 2016.
In 2020 and 2021, NWR competed in the Formula Regional Americas Championship, taking wins with Victor Franzoni, Jordan Missig, Ian Rodriguez and Jacob Abel. Franzoni finished third in the championship in 2020, while Missig was fifth overall this past season. Heading into 2022, the team is focused on adding to their race win and series championship total.
The team has already begun its off-season testing program in preparation for the 2022 season and will continue to do so until the series’ official Spring Training event on the Homestead-Miami Speedway’s road course on Feb. 14-15.
