PLAINFIELD, Ill. — Hot off his NTT IndyCar Series debut two weeks ago at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Toby Sowery will be back behind the wheel of the No. 51 Dale Coyne Racing with RWR entry for this weekend’s Ontario Honda Dealers Indy Toronto as well as next month’s Bitnile.com Grand Prix of Portland in Oregon.
Sowery impressed in his first race with the team by moving up from his 24th place on the starting grid to finish 13th. He also finished the race with the most on track passes of any driver in the field with 10.
“It’s amazing to be back with Dale Coyne Racing,” said Sowery. “Having such a strong debut has certainly set our hopes and expectations fairly high. Now that I’ve got a weekend under my belt, I feel I’ve got foundations to build on and that’s definitely the goal. I’ve not been to Toronto or Portland in a very long time, but I really enjoyed those events and atmosphere previously.
“Portland is also where I got my Indy NXT win, so it will be great to go back there. I can’t wait to finish off the road courses in the No. 51 for DCR.”
Sowery last ran on the streets of Toronto in 2019 in Indy NXT and scored two top fives which included a second-place finish. His last visit to Portland was also that same year. In addition to his win in Race 2, he placed fourth in the first round of the doubleheader weekend.
“Toby really impressed during his weekend with us at Mid-Ohio and we’re excited to have him back for another couple of races this year,” shared Team Owner Dale Coyne. “Not only was Toby a pleasure to work with, but he was up to speed immediately after not having driven one of these cars in over a year. We can’t wait to see what he’ll do on the streets of Toronto this weekend.”
Sowery will be paired with Hunter McElrea in Toronto this weekend, who will be making his first IndyCar Series start.
