Marcus Ericsson, the 2022 Indianapolis 500 winner, finished sixth in this year’s NTT IndyCar Series standings.
Piloting the No. 8 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda for the fourth consecutive season, Ericsson looked to be in the championship hunt early on.
After winning the season opener in the Streets of St. Petersburg (Fla.), the 33-year-old Swede rattled off seven additional top-10 finishes as he entered the July event at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course second in the standings.
However, a crash at the Ohio road course (27th) and a dismal 11th-place effort a week later in Toronto sank Ericsson’s title chances as teammate Alex Palou surged in the summer months to win the championship.
Ericsson nearly won a second consecutive Indianapolis 500 before settling for second after a fierce duel with eventual winner Josef Newgarden during the closing laps.
He finished the season with three podium finishes and an average finish of 8.6.
Next year, Ericsson joins Andretti Global to contest his sixth full-time season in the series.
