O’Ward Quickest In Gateway Practice Under The Lights

MADISON, Ill. — The 27-car starting lineup for Saturday’s Bommarito Automotive Group 500 wrapped up Friday’s activities at World Wide Technology Raceway with a 30-minute high-line session followed by a one-hour final practice that concluded under the lights.

Pato O’Ward of Arrow McLaren was the fastest driver in the final one-hour session with a speed of 174.708 mph in the No. 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet. The driver from Monterrey, Mexico ran 75 laps in the session.

Marcus Ericsson of Andretti Global was second at 174.191 mph in the No. 28 Honda. He ran 55 laps. Colton Herta, who crashed in his qualification attempt earlier in the day, was third at 173.698 mph in the No. 26 Gainbridge Honda. He completed 51 laps.

Josef Newgarden of Team Penske was fourth at 173.685 mph in the No. 2 Chevrolet, running 62 laps and Kyle Kirkwood of Andretti Global rounded out the top five at 173.659 mph in the No. 27 Honda.

Alex Palou, who enters the race with a 48-point lead over Will Power in the battle for the 2024 NTT IndyCar Series championships, was 16th and Power was 10th.

That is the final on-track activity for IndyCar before Saturday night’s race, which begins at 6:30 p.m. ET.
