Newgarden Paces Final Road America Drills

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. — Team Penske driver Josef Newgarden wheeled out the backup car on Sunday morning and was the fastest driver in the 30-minute warmup for Sunday’s XPEL Grand Prix at Road America.

Newgarden’s No. 2 PPG Chevrolet had a fast lap of 1:43.1311 around the 14-turn, 4.024-mile Road America road course. On Saturday during the final lap of qualifications, Newgarden had a massive crash in turn two when he hit a wet spot on the track and slammed into the SAFER Barrier at 180 miles per hour. The car launched into the air.

Despite the impact, Newgarden was not injured. Team Penske went to the backup car while Dallara assessed the damage to the team’s primary car.

Team Penske teammate Scott McLaughlin was second in the No. 3 XPEL Chevrolet at 1:43.4258. 

Scott Dixon was third in the No. 9 PNC Bank Honda at 1:43.7895 for Chip Ganassi Racing followed by Juncos Hollinger’s Romain Grosjean’s 1:43.9852 in the No. 77 Chevrolet.

Andretti Global’s Colton Herta rounded out the top five at 1:44.2889 in the No. 26 Gainbridge Honda.
