INDIANAPOLIS — Will Power of Team Penske has five wins on the 2.439-mile, 14-turn road course at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
That is why his second-quickest time in Friday’s second practice session was not surprising as he drove the No. 12 Verizon Chevrolet to a lap clocked at 1:09.8899.
“The track changed a little bit from this morning, but it was with a different tire,” Power said. “The race will be a red (tire) race because the primary tire is a lot harder. It will be like the All-Star Race (at The Thermal Club). It’s disappointing to not have everyone on the stand, but we have good guys here and will make up for it.”
Christian Lundgaard of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing was the fastest in the second practice session at 1:09.5588 in the No. 45 Hy-Vee Honda. Scott Dixon of Chip Ganassi Racing was third at 1:09.8565 in the No. 9 PNC Bank Honda.
Team Penske’s Scott McLaughlin was fourth at 1:09.8648 in the No. 3 Chevrolet with Felix Rosenqvist of Meyer Shank Racing rounding out the top five at 1:09.8965.
During the practice session, Jack Harvey spun at the exit of Turn 10, near the same area where Linus Lundqvist had his spin. Harvey was assessed a five-minute penalty for bringing out the red flag.
The field for Saturday’s Sonsio Grand Prix will be determined when qualifications begin later today at 4:20 p.m. (ET).
