BARCELONA, Spain – Sebastian Vettel topped the charts during the opening day of Formula One testing Monday at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Vettel’s best lap, 1:18.161, was turned during the morning session. The Ferrari driver also turned more laps than anyone else, completing 169 laps throughout the morning and afternoon as teams worked to understand their new cars.
McLaren’s Carlos Sainz Jr. impressed by going second fastest, .397 of a second off the best lap set by Vettel. Romain Grosjean also impressed for the American Haas F1 Team by going third fastest.
Max Verstappen was fourth fastest for Red Bull, with the Alfa Romeo entry driven by Kimi Raikkonen lapping fifth fastest. The Toro Rosso of Daniil Kvyat was sixth fastest ahead of SportPesa Racing Point F1’s Sergio Perez in seventh.
The Mercedes entries were next on the list, with Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton timing in eighth and ninth fastest, nearly two seconds off the pace set by Vettel. The Renault duo of Nico Hulkenberg and Daniel Ricciardo were the slowest cars to take time.
