AUSTIN, Texas – Sebastian Vettel continues to reset Formula One records.
The German ace scored his record breaking eighth-straight Formula One triumph on Sunday during the United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas, only giving up the lead once during a series of pit stops.
Vettel grabbed the lead on the initial start and rocketed into the lead while behind him his teammate Mark Webber battled Romain Grosjean for second. Grosjean was able to take second away from Webber in the first corner as Vettel quickly stretched his lead.
The field didn’t complete a lap under green though as contact between Pastor Maldonado and Adrian Sutil made contact, sending Sutil into the wall. That forced a brief safety car period, but when the field returned to racing Vettel quickly reassumed the lead.
The only time Vettel wasn’t at the front of the pack was during pit stops. Grosjean inherited the lead when Vettel pitted first on lap 28, but gave the spot back two laps later when Grosjean finally made his pit stop.
Once back in the lead no one would be able to catch Vettel as he cruised to his 12th Grands Prix triumph of 2013 by more than six seconds.
Grosjean finished second for Lotus, his best finish of the 2013 season, followed by Webber’s Red Bull in third. Defending U.S. Grand Prix Lewis Hamilton was fourth for Mercedes, followed by the Ferrari of Fernando Alonso in fifth.
Nico Hulkenberg put together another impressive run to finish sixth for Sauber, followed by local favorite Sergio Perez’s McLaren in seventh. Valtteri Bottas completed his impressive weekend with an eighth-place finish for Williams, followed by the Mercedes of Nico Rosberg and the McLaren of Jenson Button.
