BARCELONA, Spain – Lewis Hamilton stamped his authority over the rest of the Formula One field on Friday at Circuit de Catalunya by leading both practice sessions.
The Briton finished more than four-tenths of a second clear of teammate Nico Rosberg as Mercedes continued to dominate the Formula One field thus far during the 2014 racing season.
The silver cars set the pace whenever they were running fast on Pirelli’s hard compound tire, and after Daniel Ricciardo had briefly moved ahead on his first run on the medium rubber, Hamilton and Rosberg replied on the same tire with times that left the Red Bull trailing.
Hamilton’s best of 1:25.524 was .449 of a second faster than Rosberg’s 1:25.973, and a whopping .985 of a second faster than Ricciardo’s 1:26.509. Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari was even further back in fourth, timing in at 1:27.121s. If there was a consolation for Ferrari, it was that Alonso’s teammate Kimi Raikkonen was back on form in fifth place with 1:27.296.
In practice one, Hamilton had the fast time of 1:27.109, which came in the final moments of the session. Jenson Button’s McLaren ended up second, Ricciardo, Alonso and Rosberg.
Defending Formula One World Champion Sebastian Vettel continued his early season struggles Friday in Barcelona. He was only 20th fastest in the first practice session and then failed to make it back out on track during the second practice because of an electrical issue.
