John Force was injured in a serious accident during eliminations for the NHRA Virginia Nationals Sunday at Virginia Motorsports Park.
Force outran Terry Haddock in the first round, however, his car burst into flames upon crossing the finish line at 302.62 mph.Â
NHRA released a statement regarding the accident.
“During the first round of Funny Car eliminations at the PlayNHRA Virginia Nationals on Sunday at Virginia Motorsports Park, John Force’s Funny Car suffered an engine explosion at the finish line and then crossed the centerline, striking both guard walls before coming to a stop,” the statement read.
“Force was alert and was examined onsite by the NHRA Medical Team before being transported to a local medical facility for further evaluation.”

John Force Racing later released a statement saying he is in the intensive care unit but did not comment on the extent of the injuries.Â
Force was involved in a serious accident in 2007 that nearly took his life at Texas Motorplex. The crash had forced the 16-time champion to be air-lifted to a hospital, where he remained at for a month with a broken left wrist, compound fracture in his left ankle, major abrasions on his right knee and several broken fingers.Â
