SONOMA, Calif. – NHRA Funny Car competitors Alexis DeJoria suffered a broken pelvis during a crash in the first round of eliminations on Sunday during the Toyota NHRA Sonoma Nationals at Sonoma Raceway.
DeJoria, driver of the Tequila Patrón Toyota Camry for Kalitta Motorsports, was racing from the left lane alongside John Force in the opening round of eliminations on Sunday. The Patrón Toyota Camry lost traction turned left as soon as DeJoria left the starting line, leading to the car slamming the retaining wall.
The former NHRA Funny Car race winner exited the car under her own power, but was quickly attended to by medical personnel. She was transported via ambulance to Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa, Calif., which she was diagnosed with a high-energy fracture of the left pelvis. She was discharged from the hospital Sunday afternoon.
The injury does not require immediate surgery, but it is unknown at this time if DeJoria will compete in the next NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event, the Protect The Harvest NHRA Northwest Nationals in Seattle, Wash., on Aug. 5-7.
