CONCORD, N.C. — Jimmy Owens continued on his late-season tear of winning dirt late model races, capturing Friday night’s World of Outlaws Late Model Series feature during the PEAK Motor Oil World of Outlaws World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte.
Owens started ninth in the 50-lap race on the four-tenths-mile dirt track and steadily worked his way to the front of the field, taking the lead from Rick Eckert, who won the Oct. 10 WoO LMS race at The Dirt Track, on lap 29.
From there Owens steadily pulled away from Eckert to take the victory in a race that went the final 46 laps under the green flag.
Owens ended the season with his second straight Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series triumph and has won the Dirt Track World Championship and Cotton Pickin’ 100 in consecutive weeks heading into the World Finals.
“I was hoping once the track dried out, we would have a little bit better car,” Owens said of his struggles earlier in the night. “We weren’t too good when the track was tacky earlier in the program.
“We’ve had good cars when we come here,” said Owens, who also triumphed during the World Finals last year.
Eckert, the defending World of Outlaws Late Model Series champion, finished second.
“Last year, we couldn’t run on the same lap as Jimmie and this year we were right behind him. We are gaining on him,” Eckert said. “Darrell (Lanigan) and I were having quite a battle and I thought he was going by me again and at was Jimmy who passed me, I said, ‘Oh, s—.”
Lanigan finished third with Dale McDowell and Scott Bloomquist rounding out the top five.
