CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — As the first Super DIRTcar Series stop at Land of Legends approaches on July 3, Peter Britten is busy making sure he is ready to deliver a top performance at his home track. The Brisbane, QLD native knows the confidence and momentum it can give him going forward.
“The series race at Land of Legends should be one of my better races,” Britten said. “We’ve been racing there this year, and I already have two wins. I feel like we’re definitely rolling well there right now. Just a matter of doing that on that night.”
To pull everything together and end his night with a trip to victory lane, Britten knows that it will take more than just a sound vehicle. Wise driving choices at the right time can make or break a run for the win.
“Sometimes, it’s about being fast at the right moments too,” Britten said. “It doesn’t do you much good leading the first 50 laps of a 100-lap race if you’re race car is going to fade at the end. Sometimes you have to give up alittle at the start to make sure you’re good at the end. And then the race itself has to play out your way with everything that happens. We just have to get it done, bottom line. The guys that win these races just find a way to make it happen and that’s what I have to do.”
After recording two fourth place finishes in the first four races of the year, Britten currently sits fourth in points. The early season momentum is leaving him optimistic about his chances going forward. After suffering several untimely mechanical issues last season and underperforming at familiar tracks, the Brisbane, QLD native felt like his potential was untapped. This year, the pendulum has started to swing the other way.
“There’s been a couple of races where I feel like we’ve had a little bit of luck on our side for once,” Britten said. “Most years, we mostly had all the bad luck. That’s helped, and you try and learn from your mistakes and every time you hit the race track you want to be fine-tuning and keep getting better wherever possible…everyone has been working really hard, and I feel really good about the speed in our car.
“Hopefully, we can keep staying up front and make the right decisions wherever possible.”
With 37 top-five finishes in series competition to date, with the most recent coming at his second home track Albany-Saratoga Speedway on June 13, he wants this year to be the year he can translate his experience, current momentum, and hard work into returning to victory lane.
