CONCORD, N.C. — A side-by-side finish ended an otherwise forgettable Super DIRTcar Series feature on Saturday afternoon’s program during the fourth annual Lowes Foods World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte.
Jimmy Phelps charged under Danny Johnson racing off the fourth turn as the pair bounced off of one another heading to the checkered flag in a 30-lap event that was marred by tire wear on the four-tenths-mile oval.
Both Johnson and Phelps had experienced flat tires and gone to the pits for fresh rubber, putting them in position to battle on the final lap.
Decker had inherited the lead on lap 23 and persevered through four of the 14 yellow flags — mostly for flat tires — and was leading the race when the final restart came on lap 29.
Johnson got even on lap 29 and took the lead heading to the white flag as Decker slowed with a flat tire. As Decker fell through the field, Phelps got a run on the top of the track and pulled even with Johnson entering the fourth turn.
Phelps got the jump off the turn and beat Johnson in a side-by-side finish.
Gary Tomkins, who started last (28th), went the full distance on the tires on which he started, and finished third. Brett Hearn and Kyle Strickler rounded out the top five.
With point-leader Matt Sheppard cutting a tire and finishing 14th, Phelps pulled to within 22 points of Sheppard heading into Saturday night’s season finale.
