DELTA, Utah — The newest race track in central Utah is the latest addition to IMCA’s Western Region.
Both IMCA Modifieds and Smiley’s Racing Chassis Southern SportMods will run at 10 Saturday shows at Millard County Raceway in Delta. Opening night is scheduled for April 21 on the ¼-mile oval, with point races slated through Sept. 29.
Located on the Millard County Fairgrounds, the facility hosted a handful of events in 2011 and will be promoted by asphalt late model veterans David Peterson and Joe Miller.
“One of the things we like best about IMCA is that every sanctioned track drivers go to has the same set of rules,” said Peterson, noting that no date at Millard County conflicts with race nights at Desert Thunder Raceway in Price or Diamond Mountain Speedway in Vernal. “If you’re racing at an IMCA track, you know you can show up and race without getting any grief.”
“With a late model, you’ve got to go to each track’s website and check the rules to see how you have to change your car to race there,” he continued.
Both Desert Thunder and Diamond Mountain began sanctioning their Modifieds with IMCA in 2007. Price added the SportMods in 2008 with Vernal following suit the following year.
“There are already a lot of Modifieds in this area and now there will be three tracks they can run at just a few hours apart,” Peterson said. “SportMods usually race on the same programs with the Modifieds so it just made sense for us to sanction them, too.”
