CONCORD, N.C. — Canadian drivers went three-for-three in Super DIRTcar Series big-block modified competition during the World of Outlaws World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte.
Mat Williamson, who won Thursday night’s main event, was back in victory lane on Saturday night.
The St. Catharines, Ontario, native grabbed the lead from hometown boy Max McLaughlin on a lap-38 restart in the 40-lap event at the four-tenths-mile track.
Quebec driver Mathieu Desjardins won on Friday night.
Williamson started eighth and steadily made his way forward with the help of numerous late-race yellow flags to earn the $15,000 top prize.
It was Williamson’s 31st career Super DIRTcar Series triumph.
“Demetrious (Drellos)showed me where to be and then the caution came out thank God.” Williamson said. “I didn’t think I was going to get Max. Without those yellows, I don’t think we would have won. Those cautions probably cost him the race. He had a good car. I threw a hail mary on the top and luckily we got by him.”
McLaughlin held off Demetrious Drellos to finish second.
“The caution hurt us,” McLaughlin said. “We had a good car. I was patient early. We wanted one here in our hometown.”
Drellos, who was coming fast in the top lane when the final yellow flag waved with three laps to go, finished third. It was his sixth consecutive top-five finish during the World Finals.
“That caution with three to go was the best thing and the worst thing for us,” he said. “We showed Matt where to go and he went up there and won it.”
Anthony Perrego and Alex Payne rounded out the top five.
