Two Regions, Lots Of Races For STSS Modifieds

MILLSBORO, Del. – Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series fueled by Sunoco management have released the Northeast schedules for the STSS big-block/small-block modified and crate 602 sportsman divisions.

North and South regional breakdowns have been established with separate point funds available for each.

For the seventh consecutive year, Bob Hilbert Sportswear of Boyertown, Pa., returns as the title sponsor of the series.

All STSS events will be streamed live by SPEED SPORT TV affiliate Dirt Track Digest TV during the upcoming season.

“We’re very proud of the schedule we’ve put together,” STSS organizer Brett Deyo said. “We’re hopeful COVID-19 restrictions will be easing up by the spring. Of course, we will do our best to adapt and keep our racers on the track again.”

Fifteen tracks are represented on the Northeast schedule, with swings planned for both Florida (January) and Louisiana (November).

The STSS Modified South Region, presented by Velocita-USA, Design for Vision and Sunglass Central, kicks off in March at Georgetown (Del.) Speedway with the annual Melvin L. Joseph Memorial race on March 13. The event pays $10,049 to win for 49 laps. A Friday (March 12) preliminary night leads into the Saturday main event.

Georgetown boasts three stops on the schedule, including the Blast at the Beach on Aug. 24 and the Mid-Atlantic Championship Weekend on Oct. 29-30.

A Central Pennsylvania doubleheader is planned for March 20-21 with Selinsgrove (Pa.) Speedway making a first-time series schedule appearance on Saturday, complimenting the first of two visits to Port Royal (Pa.) Speedway Sunday.

Charlie Cathell’s Delaware Int’l Speedway in Delmar, Del., returns to an early-season date with the Diamond State 50 slated for April 27.

The Garden State of New Jersey is well represented. New Egypt (N.J.) Speedway (May 25) and Doug Rose’s new Bridgeport (N.J.) Motorsports Park high-banked layout (July 27) make their respective returns to the STSS.

Big Diamond Speedway in Minersville, Pa., as it has since the ’15 season, hosts the only combined North-South modified event, the Anthracite Assault on June 8.

The pristine Port Royal Speedway on the Juniata Fairgrounds will partner with BD Motorsports Media LLC to present the Speed Showcase 200 weekend headlined by a $50,000-to-win event Oct. 14-16.

Hurlock Auto & Speed Supply of Hurlock, Md., has taken over title sponsorship role of the STSS Modified North Region for the season.

Gary and Donna Palmer’s Accord (N.Y.) Speedway is slated to open the North battle on Tuesday, May 11 with the Battle of the Bullring event. One week later, attention turns to the Finger Lakes and Tyler Siri’s Outlaw Speedway in Dundee, N.Y., on May 18 for the Outlaw Showdown at the four-tenths-mile track.

After a successful return last year under the Folk family’s leadership, Penn Can Speedway in Susquehanna, Pa., takes over the Memorial Day weekend May 30 slot in the return of the Clash at the Can, which was run successfully at the track from 2010-2014.

Following the Big Diamond June 8 combination event, attention turns to Fonda (N.Y.) Speedway on Independence Day weekend. The Firecracker 50 paying $10,000 to win is slated for Sunday, July 4.

The new Bloomsburg (Pa.) Fair Raceway located on the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds will welcome the STSS on Wednesday, July 14 for the Battle at Bloomsburg event.

August features stops at traditional STSS Empire State venues of Woodhull (N.Y.) Raceway (Aug. 10) and Thunder Mountain Speedway in Center Lisle, N.Y. (Aug. 31).

After being halted by state restrictions for one year, the Fonda 200 brings its $53,000 payday back to the Fonda Speedway Sept. 16-18.

The Short Track SuperNationals at Ron Ford’s Afton (N.Y.) Motorsports Park wraps up the North Region with the ‘Working Man’s Race’ Short Track SuperNationals on Columbus Day weekend.

The Crate 602 Sportsman has grown with the STSS. Belmont’s Garage has signed on to present the South Region, with Precision Hydraulic & Oil taking the lead on the North Region. This is the first time in series history both regions have title sponsors.

The Crate 602 Sportsman South Region includes nine events: three at Georgetown (March 13, Aug. 24, Oct. 30) and single stops at Selinsgrove (March 20), Delaware Int’l (April 27), New Egypt (May 25), Big Diamond (June 8), Bridgeport (July 27) and Port Royal (Oct. 16).

The Crate 602 Sportsman North Region visits Accord (May 11), Fonda (July 4 and Sept. 18), Bloomsburg (July 14), Woodhull (Aug. 10), Thunder Mountain (Aug. 31) and Afton (Oct. 9).

For the first time ever, STSS Modifieds and Crate 602 Sportsman tackle Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, Fla., for the Sunshine Swing Jan. 26-30. An open practice on Tuesday leads into four nights of racing at the three-eighths-mile track.

Modifieds race for $4,000, $5,000, $6,000 and $8,000 to win over the week, with Crate 602 Sportsman in action for $1,250 to win twice and $1,500 to win twice.

Nov. 10-13 will be earmarked for the return to the Bayou for the second annual Cajun Swing events. A $20,000-to-win Mods in the Marsh 75 will headline the swing at Jerry Hobson’s Chatham (La.) Speedway Nov. 12-13. Preliminary events will be announced in the coming weeks.

A Short Track Super Series affiliate Cajun Region has been formed and will host events in Louisiana and Texas to aid the growth of the division. Approximately 10-12 events will be run, kicking off at Chatham on March 27. Chris and Tim Bates will serve as series directors in the new region.
