TUCSON, Ariz. — Race five of the Arizona Dirt Track Tour at USA Raceway saw Ricky Thornton Jr. win two out of three features.
Lacking an IMCA Northern sport mod ride, Thornton won a competitive modified main and remained dominant in stock cars.
Alex Stanford led four laps before a yellow flag set up a restart with the following lap having three leaders.
Stanford was passed by Jeff Taylor on the bottom of turn two before Thornton passed Taylor on the top of turn three.
Thornton completed lap five as the leader and kept Taylor and Stanford behind him the final 20 laps for the $2,000 victory.
The last few laps featured a four-car battle for second, which Taylor took over Stanford. Chaz Baca took fourth and Drew Armstrong was fifth.
IMCA Northern sport mods showed how it is often better to be second when approaching traffic.
Brady Bjella led the first 13 laps and came upon traffic in turn three. Bjella was momentarily slowed when he came up on a slower car and Austen Becerra took the opportunity and dropped under Bjella for the pass.
Eighth-starting Becerra was pressured the final seven laps but held on for the win over Bjella and Bo Partain.
In IMCA stock car racing, Thornton made it four out of five, wasting no time taking the lead from third starting spot
Brendon LaBatte put mid-race pressure on Thornton but dropped back a couple car lengths after that effort and finished second with Chanse Hollatz finishing third.
The tour concludes Saturday at USA Raceway.
