CONCORD, N.C. — Oh, Canada!
Quebec native Mathieu Desjardins claimed his first career Super DIRTcar Series big-block modified victory on night three of the World of Outlaws World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte.
Desjardins was the second Canadian in as many nights to win a Super DIRTcar Series feature as Mat Williamson won on Thursday night.
Desjardins started on the pole and led until lap 13, when he gave up the lead to series champion Matt Sheppard.
However, Sheppard stopped on the track with a mechanical problem during a lap 19 yellow flag, handing the lead back to Desjardins.
Over the final 11 laps, Desjardins, who finished 14th on Thursday, held off series veteran Tim Fuller to claim his first series victory in dramatic fashion.
“I was a kid and my dream was to drive a race car,” Desjardins said. “Today I won the World Finals at Charlotte. I do not understand it, it is crazy. I knew I had a good car and I knew I had to go to the top and flat foot it. I saw Tim Fuller, but he respected me and held the bottom.”
Fuller finished second, while Demetrious Drellos, Peter Britten and Max McLaughlin rounded out the top five.
“I had him a couple times and I would have had to do him dirty, but I got done dirty yesterday and I didn’t like it too much,” said Fuller, who started 12th.
