NICHOLS, S.C. — With the facility soaked by rain already, Lake View Motor Speedway has opted to cancel this weekend’s Pop Hahn’s South Carolina Speedweeks.
The event was set to include the Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series Fueled By Sunoco Modifieds and Crate 602 Sportsman Feb. 2-4.
“It’s Monday morning and the facility already took an inch of rain overnight,” Lake View promoter Scott Tripp said. “It’s still raining, and the forecast is calling for showers and rain all week, with no sun to dry it out.
“We were all looking forward to having the Short Track Super Series at Lake View. It’s disappointing, but the facility is already very wet and we couldn’t see anything but a lot of mud in the future for this weekend.”
Tripp wanted to make an early decision for the benefit of teams and fans.
“We wanted to get the word out right away for everyone to change their plans and get refunds on reservations,” he added.
STSS organizer Brett Deyo echoed Tripp’s thoughts.
“Nothing about the rainfall all week was going to produce the type of event we wanted in our debut at Lake View,” Deyo said. “I know Scott (Tripp) and Tim (Clemons) worked hard on this show, but it is the right decision.
“We look forward to partnering with Scott, Tim and Lake View in the future.”
The 10th anniversary STSS season kickoff will wait until Feb. 7-11 with the ‘Sunshine Swing’ at All-Tech Raceway in Lake City, Fla. Both the STSS Modifieds and STSS Crate 602 Sportsman will be in action at the Wendell Durrance-promoted half-mile oval.
