PEORIA, Ariz. — If Canyon Speedway Park fans expected a battle between fourth-starting Hunter Marriott and sixth-starting Ricky Thornton Jr., then someone should have told Thornton.
Winning his third IMCA AZ Mod Tour main, Thornton took just a lap and a half to race from sixth to the lead. Once in front, it wasn’t Marriott but eventually Casey Arneson that gave Thornton some pressure.
Arneson raced Jeff Taylor for several laps for 2nd before using a low line pass for the spot. With eight laps to go, Arneson was on Thornton’s tail, but the Adel, Iowa driver pulled away from Arneson.
When Arneson showed signs of pulling up to Thornton a second time, the Tour point leader again added to his lead and collected the $1,500 victory.
Arneson was second from 10th starting, Taylor third, with Marriott and Jake O’Neil filling the next two spots.
The sport mod main was led by Chase Rudolf for six laps before Jim Horejsi used the bottom line on the backstretch to pass Rudolf, only to see a yellow negate the move. Horejsi eventually had to pit for a repair and finished 15th.
From the restart until the 20 laps were scored, Rudolf had no other significant challenges and won over Taylor Kuehl, Ryan Moser, Brady Bjella and Kelly Jacobson.
The Tuesday night show drew 61 IMCA modifieds and 24 IMCA Northern Sport mods.
