BRITT, Iowa — The first Friesen Performance IMCA Modified win in Iowa this season for Jerry Flippo came in late June at Hancock County Speedway.
The California transplant’s biggest win in the Hawkeye State came Wednesday night, in the same location.
Flippo got the best of Tripp Gaylord in a late battle of fast and furious lead changes on his way to the $5,000 checkers at Hancock County’s Corteva Agriscience Night of 10,000 Stars show, in the second installment of IMCA.TV Speedweek.
Gaylord had caught Cody Thompson shortly after the mandatory pit stop halfway through the 50-lapper at Britt. Flippo made his way forward from 11th starting and restarted second following the latter of two lap 44 cautions.
“I’m glad we had that restart,” said Flippo, just as glad to come out of the back-and-forth battled that ensued before he gained some separation from Gaylord over the last three circuits. “I got my first win in Iowa this season here and was just trying to race tonight the same as a weekly show, staying calm and keeping it all together.”
Hard charger Kollin Hibdon started 18th and made a late drive to third.
Nick Meyer and 15th-starting Jake McBirnie rounded out the top five. Fifty-three IMCA Modifieds were entered.
Thompson had led the first half of the race with Gaylord, Cole Denner and Flippo his closest pursuers.
Gaylord and Flippo were quickly into the top two spots after the midway break. They were running with lapped cars before the lap 44 yellows that set the stage for Flippo’s heroics. Flippo was already eligible to qualify for the Fast Shaft All-Star Invitational.
Heath Tulp reeled in and then outran Kelly Shryock for the $1,000 IMCA Sunoco Stock Car win, earning B & B Racing Chassis All-Star qualifying eligibility as well. Damon Murty was third.
Colby Fett got the best of brother Alec and Keegan Nordquist for a $1,000 win of his own, in the Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMods. Mike Smith was the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock winner while Devin Jones paced the Mach-1 Sport Compacts.
Another $5,000 top prize for the modifieds is at stake Thursday at Kossuth County Speedway in Algona, where night three of Speedweek plays out with the Larry Evers Fair Street Face Off.
That race program will be broadcast by SPEED SPORT affiliate IMCA.TV.
