BARBERVILLE, Fla. — Danny Johnson ran down early leader Matt Sheppard on lap five and led to the checkered flag in Wednesday night’s DIRTcar big-block modified feature at Volusia Speedway Park.

Though Sheppard got alongside a few times before spinning with three laps remaining to put Brett Hearn into second. Hearn got the lead momentarily on the ensuing restart but “The Doctor” rode the cushion back around him in turn two.

“I could have moved up on him but that wouldn’t have been nice,” offered Hearn as he described their battle. “It was tough even seeing by then, as the track looked dry but it wasn’t and I ran out of tear offs.”

“I knew what I had to do and I did it,” declared Johnson in victory lane. “I put the car where it had to be to win.”

Canadian Mario Clair was third in the 30-lap event, with Australian Peter Britten and Jimmy Horton trailing.
