Baca Romps To Winter Nationals Title

SOMERTON, Ariz. — The IMCA.TV Winter Nationals at Cocopah Speedway ended the eight-race series Saturday and five IMCA-sanctioned divisions had champions.

Point champions received a complimentary week stay at Playa Azul Seypet Resorts in Mexico along with $1,500 for travel expenses.

Chaz Baca Jr. led modifieds in points after round seven.  Starting seventh in the main made going forward for him a necessity.  Tim Ward, second in points, started two rows in front of Baca.

Dylan Thornton led two laps before Tim Ward drove by while Chaz Baca was soon in third. A yellow with four laps remaining set the table for a dramatic finish.

Ward’s healthy lead was gone and Baca was trying to maintain his point lead. Using the lower groove, Baca quickly moved into second,  then drove under Ward in turn two a lap later to take the lead.

Baca had the win and point championship while Ward and Thornton completed the podium.

Shelby Williams led the stock car main for nine laps before Zane DeVilbiss used the top in turn four to take the lead. Williams had mechanical issues and dropped out.

DeVilbiss broke away from the pack and scored his third win in the series. Bo Partain was second and Rick Diaz took third.

The stock car point champion was Rob VanMil.

Nathan Speten had a 15-point lead in Northern sport mods and would be difficult to pass.  His steady performance had gotten him a huge lead compared to other classes.

Tyler Bannister led green to checkers for the win and Speten was point champion.

Hobby stocks were led by Nathan Deragon with Payce Herrera trying outside and inside moves but not making the pass. A yellow with three laps left made no difference as Deragon was flawless.

Following Deragon across the line were Herrera and Morgan Olmstead was third.

Cody Williams was the point champion.

The sport compact win and point championship went to Oliver Monson.

The 2025 Winter Nationals will be Jan. 7-18.
