BOONE, Iowa — Another record-setting night at the NAPA Auto Parts Double Down Prelude saw another driver make history at Boone Speedway.
Logan Anderson won the second of two Sunday evening features for the Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMods, extending his unprecedented Prelude streak in that division to three straight checkers.
Anderson led the last 21 of 25 laps, chased the last 15 of those circuits by Robbie Thome. Anderson was leading by less than nine hundredths of a second before a late restart and managed to add a tenth or two to that lead the final couple laps.
“That was a hard fought race. I can’t believe I’ve won this three years in a row,” he said. “It’s crazy to think about, with the number of cars and the talent that are here.”
Thome had also been runner-up to Anderson in 2022. Justin Addison, Jacob Olmstead and 18th starting Randy Havlik completed the top five.
A record 709 cars competed over the two days of the Prelude, 45 more than at last year’s special.
Matt Looft won the other Northern SportMod feature while IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock checkers flew for Zach Olmstead and Cory Probst.
The 2022 IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals champion and six-time national champion, Looft drew the pole and led seventh starting Tyler Bannister start to finish.
The only caution waved on lap 11; Cam Reimers moved up to third the next time around with Adam Birck and Jake Sachau ending 4-5.
“It’s amazing. The track was perfect,” Looft said. “We’ve got a main goal to put her up front Saturday night. Everything is working good and we want to keep rolling.”
Olmstead, also a 2022 Super Nationals champ and the winner of three straight Stephenville Starter Races of Champions, was running second when leader Keith Burg got out of line with just two laps left.
“If Keith didn’t screw up I wasn’t going to get him,” Olmstead said. “But it’s a good confidence booster going into the week.”
Austin Jahnz, 21st starting Mike Smith and Drew Barglof were next across the stripe.
Probst became the final winner of the weekend, after taking the lead following the first of two cautions before midway.
He’d hold off 14th starting Kalyb Brunssen in a finish filled with hard charger contenders. Adam Wasserman went from 21st to third, Dillon Richards from 16th to fourth, Joe Wollenhaupt from 15th to fifth and Seth Butler rocketed from 26th starting to sixth.
“This kind of track really isn’t really my cup of tea. I run a lot of big half miles and three-eighths and the corners aren’t as tight,” Probst said after his initial Prelude triumph. “It’s just a whole different pace in the corners than I’m used to but I think I’m learning the track better.”
Both SportMods and Hobby Stocks begin qualifying Monday, the first day of the 42nd annual IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals. The complete program for Late Models is also on the card.
