ALTA, Iowa – The Arnold Motor Supply Dirt Knights Tour for IMCA modifieds came to Buena Vista Raceway Wednesday night, and track point leader Chris Abelson used the redraw and track knowledge to lead all 30 laps for the win.
A 20 car field of modifieds raced three draw heats, with passing and finishing points determining the main event lineup and the top point cars redrawing for the front of the field.
Abelson redrew the pole, with Torrence, Calif., driver Cody Laney alongside.
After winning the first two nights of a four-race swing, Richie Gustin started seventh. Abelson immediately established a significant lead and was cruising around the three-eighths-mile when a yellow with 18 laps complete offered Laney and Gustin some hope.
Gustin took third on lap three down the front stretch and stayed well behind Laney most of the race.
The restart took three tries to work, and each time Abelson drew away from Laney until the last 10 when the gap closed. Laney gained ground on the front stretch, but Abelson won the back stretch to maintain his four car length lead.
An apparent challenge by Laney never quite materialized. The final 12 laps were nonstop and Abelson had the win over Laney and Gustin.
Joel Rust was fourth and Kelly Shryock took fifth.
In other IMCA racing, Stefan Sybesma won the stock car finale and Doug Smith posted his 140th career win in the sport mod main.
Mike Smith took the hobby stock trophy and the sport compact winner was Caine Mohlberg.
